Is It Alright To Always Eat Your Lunch Early?

March 6, 2019

(2 minute read)

What does it mean when come 11am you are chomping at the bit to eat your lunch?

Is it contributing to an increase in weight or preventing you from achieving those fat loss goals your looking for?

The reason for wanting to eat your lunch earlier may not always be because you are hungry. There are a few reasons that may contribute to this:

Are you dehydrated?

Sometimes hunger can be mistaken for thirst, water helps our body cells to make use of the nutrients in our food. A sudden craving for food or the feeling of suddenly being really hungry can be a sign of dehydration. Drink some water then wait a while to see if the hunger subsides if not then it may be time to eat.

Are you avoiding snacking?

If you are avoiding snacking completely then you may find your a lot hungrier between meals, snacking isn’t a bad thing at all, just make sure it’s a healthy snack (fruit, veggies, avocado, nuts, seeds, an egg, natural yoghurt are all good examples). Even if you are trying to lose weight, grab a healthy snack mid morning to keep your hunger at bay.

Are you bored?

Boredom can lead to emotional eating, going through social media looking at lots of pretty food photos can certainly trigger hunger. Instead of eating lunch early take your self out for a walk or distract yourself in another way, this may ease hunger.

Was your breakfast healthy?

Breakfast should be a balance of protein, whole grain carbohydrates and healthy fats. If your breakfast is lower in protein and high in white starchy carbohydrates or sugar (bread, bagel, cereal, breakfast bars) then this will give you little nutrients and leave you feeling hungry soon after.

Get some protein in your breakfast and stick away from the bread, cereal or breakfast bars!

Have you been working hard?

If you’re working-out harder than before then you will be burning more calories, this will leave you feeling a little hungrier, though a boost in metabolism which will mean you burn the calories your eating faster. If you are looking to lose weight, don’t skip meals and don’t eat more to compensate your hunger. Instead nourish your body with meals and snacks high in protein and vegetables with some healthy whole grain carbohydrates and fats, this will fuel your body and keep your hunger at bay, helping your body to burn excess fat.

The verdict:

It is okay to eat lunch earlier sometimes if you are hungry, but listen to your body, if this is a regular thing and means you are wanting a second lunch by 2pm then you may want to make a few of the changes above as eating your lunch early out of boredom, dehydration or because your breakfast is lacking healthy proteins and nutrients then this may be causing you to eat more though out the day which may cause weight gain or prevent you from achieving those results you want.

I hope you find this useful and as always drop me an email with any questions.
